![]() Since the runes were categorised as magical alphabet they were credited as an invention of the Norse god, Odin, known as Woden or Wotan in Germany and by the name of Grim, the ‘hooded one’, in Anglo-Saxon England. Scholars and archeologists even disagree on the fundamental information of when and where runic writing first appeared. The subject of the runes is steeped in mystery and secrecy. ![]() This etymological connection with whispered secrets and the esoteric makes the runes not only an important method of recondite communication in writing but it distinguishes them from other scripts as truly magical alphabet, composed of word symbols which were believed to posses occult powers. The term to ‘rown’, ‘roon’ or ’round’ was in common usage in Anglo-Saxon England and signified the whispering of a secret. Runes are the pre- Christian letters in a set of related alphabets known as runic alphabets, which were used to write various Germanic languages before the adoption of the Latin alphabet and for specialised purposes like: communication, divination, magical rituals, spells and foretelling the future. The word rune itself comes from the Norse runar, magic sign, and the Old German runa, meaning either ‘to whisper’ or ‘a secret’. It is a potent, but still little understood or researched, magical writing system known to an ancient man, and it is the precursor of our modern alphabet. The subject of my project is a runic alphabet which is something apart and distinctive from everyday use. An alphabet can be defined as a set of letters used in language or writing and is derived from the first two words of the Greek system writing – alpha and beta. Writing is a means of communication using letters formed to create words. I aimed to explore their origins, meanings and applications both, within and beyond the Slavic culture. ![]() Considering how broad the subject is I decided to narrow it down and to focus on the Runes only. These are early Slavic tribes, their mythology and beliefs, and their runic writing system in particular. My FMP research starting point involved gathering information about things I am really interested in and that I have recently started to study on my own.
